Jeera (Cumin) Basmati Rice

Jeera rice is the most simple of all flavoured rice and is an excellent accompaniment with all dishes.


Basmati rice 1 cup or 300gms
Onions 1 large, thinly sliced
Cumin seeds 1/2 tbsp.
Bay leaves 2
Oil 4 tbsp.
Salt To taste
Water 2 cups


Cooking Instructions

To make sure you get lovely fluffy rice, wash it in several changes of cold water, then leave to soak for about 30 minutes in fresh cold water.

Heat oil in a pan and add bay leaves and cumin seeds. Allow them to sizzle for about 20 seconds. The spices will give a wonderful fragrant flavour to the rice.

Then add the sliced onions and brown them slightly over moderate heat.

Once the onions are cooked, add rice drained from water. Also add salt at this stage.

Mix the onion, spices and rice all together. Addwater to cover the rice. Bring water to boil and keep on medium to high flame for 5-10mins. Once the water starts going down, cover the pan.

Simmer for 5-10mins or until cooked.
