Palak Paneer

Paneer also known as cottage cheese cooked in spinach gravy with aromatic and fresh spices.


Spinach (Palak) 2 bunches (whole leaves, approx. 500gms)
Onion 1 mediumfinely chopped
Tomatoes 2 medium pureed
Cottage Cheese (Paneer) 300gms
Garlic 2 large cloves (finely chopped)
Green chilli 1 whole
Bay Leaf 1
Red chilli powder 1/2 tsp.
Cumin 1/2 tsp.
Cream 2 tbsp. (optional)
Oil 5 tbsp.
Water 3/4 large cup
Salt To taste

For Spinach Paste

Boil all the spinach in ¾ cup of water and green chilli. Do this on high gas initially and once the water starts to go down lower the temperature.  Blend this paste and keep aside.

Cooking Instructions

Now in a pan heat the oil on a medium flame.

Add bay leaf, cumin seeds and allow to sizzlefor 30 seconds. Then add chopped onion and fry until it turns golden brown.

Then add garlic and fry for a couple of minutes.

Now add pureed tomatoes and fry until the oil leaves the sides. Then add red chilli powder, salt followed by pureed spinach.

Bring to boil and then simmer for 10mins to get the right consistency. Check for seasoning and add water if required.

Add cottage cheese and cover for a few mins.

Remove from fire and garnish with cream.
